Auckland students send a message on the future of the Commonwealth (18/10/2009)
Students from seven Auckland schools have joined a world-wide discussion on the future of the Commonwealth.
The students were aided by Keisha Castle -Hughes and UNICEF/ MTV presenter Jay Reeve, and have produced a video that will be presented to the Government this week.
It is hoped that the video will inform New Zealand’s leaders. John Key will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Trinidad and Tobago in November.
One Tree Hill College was the venue for the major Commonwealth Conversation event. The students were asked to discuss and research the future role of the Commonwealth. They presented a filmed report that has gone to Wellington.
The Commonwealth is 60 this year and questions are being asked about its relevance to young people in the 21st Century. Half of the Commonwealth’s population of two billion is under 25.
On Wednesday the 21st at Parliament a conference will be held to explore New Zealand opinion on the future of the Commonwealth
